What Is Solution Focused Therapy?

Solution Focused therapy can be a stand-alone therapy or can be used in cooperation with other therapy techniques. Solution Focused Therapy focuses on solving problems in the present and moving toward the future we want for ourselves. This type of therapy comes from the belief that you already have what you need to solve this problem, and with coaching and counseling, you can discover the solution. 

What is a session like?

Sessions begin with goal setting and having a clear idea of what behavior or change you want to accomplish. You may already know your goals or the therapist could help you clarify them. In Solution Focused Therapy the miracle question is often used: “If a miracle occurred while you were asleep tonight, what changes would you notice in your life tomorrow?” 

Together, you and the therapist identify your natural strengths and supports. Exceptions to the problem are explored, with the outlook of identifying the behaviors and changes that move you toward your goals. Often homework can be a component of this type of therapy, so the skills can be practiced outside of session. 

What is Solution Focused Therapy used to treat? 

Solution Focus can be used to help reduce some anxiety and depression symptoms. This type of therapy can also be good to help with concerns around parenting, relationships, jobs/employment, choosing between two options, and low motivation.
